Hoi An has been listed by the US online media outlet Thrillist as being among the most beautiful and cheapest beach cities in the world, ranking third behind Algarve in Portugal and Cartagena in Colombia.

“Bigger Vietnamese cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City get most of the expat love, but neither boasts much of a beach,” Thrillist wrote. “Hoi An, on the other hand, is not only bordered on one side by spectacular green mountains, it is also a skip and a jump from spectacular stretches of sand you’ll have largely to yourself. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you can get a house or apartment for as little as $300 a month, $500 for a nice one with everything included. To fully experience the area your best bet is to rent a motorbike (about $45 a month). In a place this beautiful, you’d be ill-advised not to.”

Located in the central province of Quang Nam, Hoi An has many temples, pagodas and old houses, and was a leading trading port in Southeast Asia in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The city’s Hoai River and its channels made the list of the ten most famous canals in the world on the US-based travel website touropia.com in 2014.

Hoi An was also chosen for the 2013 Townscape Award by the UN-Habitat Regional Office in Asia.
