Opening ceremony held on Phu Quoc Island.
National Tourism Year 2016 kicked off on April 10 on Phu Quoc Island, off the coast of the Mekong Delta’s Kien Giang province.
Kien Giang was selected for the opening ceremony as its theme is Discovering the Southern Land. The beauty of the province’s nature is said to be the pride of the Mekong Delta, with vast rice fields, green orchards bursting with fruit, canals, and beautiful beaches.
In 2000 Phu Quoc Island attracted just 100,000 tourists. By 2013 the figure had grown to 620,000 and in 2014 boomed to 1.051 million. In 2015, 1.637 million guest visited the island paradise.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam told the opening ceremony that the tourism industry must always have good service and hygiene (in its food, on streets, etc) to give more pleasure to tourists. Everything, from tiny things to big things, must be clean. All behavior, such as smiling and eye contact, must be shown as a sign of respect to guests.
He also believes that the Mekong Delta in particular and the country in general will reach significant milestones in tourism in 2016.
The success of tourism on Phu Quoc Island has provided experience and confidence to Vietnamese tourism in general, he added.
National Tourism Year 2017 will be hosted by Lao Cai province, in Vietnam’s northern mountainous area.
