The first international flight landed at Van Don International Airport early on the morning of May 27.

The first scheduled Monday to Friday flights operated by Donghai Airlines departed Bao’an International Airport in Shenzhen (China) at 11.05pm on May 26 and landed in Van Don at 12.56am on May 27. It then left Van Don at 3am and arrived in Shenzhen at 5.45am on the same day. Van Don Airport held a Water Salute and ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the arrival.

Mr. Pham Ngoc Sau, Director of Van Don International Airport, said the airport is committed to creating the best conditions for Donghai Airlines’ and will help with promotional activities to introduce the destinations of Van Don and Ha Long Bay to the Shenzhen and Chinese markets.

The official opening of the new route, he went on, is a basis for Van Don Airport to continue pursuing its strategy of facilitating international flights from Asia, such as China, Taiwan (China), Thailand, South Korea, and Japan.

From June, Van Don will cater to new international routes such as Van Don - Taiwan (China) by Bamboo Airways and Van Don - Incheon (South Korea) by Vietnam Airlines. There will also be routes to and from Hainan, Nanning, and Guangzhou in China.

“At the end of this year, we will welcome flights from Japan and Bangkok,” he said. “The domestic market continues to expand with routes such as Van Don - Da Nang and Van Don - Phu Quoc.”

As a Level 4E airport (according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO), Van Don International Airport can welcome all modern aircraft. The airport has a capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year in its first stage of operations, which will expand to 5 million passengers per year by 2030.

Many incentives for visitors have already been announced. Until December 31, 2021, all passengers on flights to and from Van Don International Airport will be entitled to free entry to one of the famous destinations in Quang Ninh province, such as the complex of Yen Tu Monuments and Landscapes, Ha Long Bay, or Bai Tu Long Bay.

Passengers also have the chance to receive a 50 per cent discount on ticket prices to visit the most modern entertainment complex in Southeast Asia - the Sun World Halong Complex.

Those traveling to and from Van Don are also given free access to high-quality shuttle buses on the return route from the airport to Ha Long city, which takes some 90 minutes.
