The Vinh Phuc People’s Committee has recently approved the plan to develop an ecotourism site at the foot of Tam Dao Mountain on an area of over 6,000 ha by 2020 with a vision to 2030.

The site spans Minh Quang, Hop Chau, Tam Quan, Dai Dinh and Dao Tru communes in Tam Dao district, on 1,193 ha in total, and include Vinh Ninh, Dong Mo and Ben Tam Lake, the Tay Thien cultural and festival center, Lang Ha Lake, Tam Dao Golf Course, Xa Huong, and Ban Long Lake.

It will also feature a residential area on 820 ha, infrastructure on 213 ha, an environmental protection area on 3,115 ha, and an area for other purposes on 687 ha.

Tam Dao has the conditions necessary to develop ecotourism, resorts, and spiritual tourism but faces a host of difficulties in attracting investment, primarily because it lacks infrastructure and easy road access from the foot of the mountain to the top.

In October the province passed a plan to develop rural traffic networks in the 2017-2020 period, with all roads in lowland areas to be asphalted and at least 50 per cent of roads in mountainous areas to be asphalted. Remaining roads will be asphalted in the 2019-2020 period.

In the first half of this year Vinh Phuc welcomed almost 2 million tourists, up 13 per cent year-on-year, including 13,450 international tourists. Total revenue was estimated at VND721 billion ($32.2 million), up 19 per cent.

Vinh Phuc province is expected to receive $200 million in FDI this year. In the first quarter FDI stood at $92 million, 46 per cent higher than the target. Domestic investment for the year was targeted at VND5 trillion ($223 million), but in the first quarter reached 95 per cent of the target, with VND4.757 trillion ($213 million).

In the industrial sector, in the first half the Vinh Phuc Industrial Zone Management Board licensed three new domestic projects with total investment of VND807.98 billion ($36 million), a 4.9-fold increase year-on-year and equal to 115 per cent of the 2016 target.

It also licensed 12 new FDI projects with total registered investment of $135.46 million and permitted eight existing projects to add capital totaling $19.8 million. Eight FDI projects opened on time in the first half, raising the total number of projects in industrial zones to 156.

By 2020, Vinh Phuc targets becoming an industrial province and a tourism center with resorts of international standard. It also targets average economic growth per capita increasing from 7 to 7.5 per cent per year and gross regional domestic product (GRDP) to be $4,800 to $5,000.
