SocialEco researching a $1 smartphone and seeking partners in Vietnam.
SocialEco has announced its new $1 smartphone and ecosystem project, which is currently under development.
Mr. Theo Cosmora, CEO of SocialEco, said that providing a cheap smartphone would not only provide information access for people on low incomes but also help them approach apps on the ecosystem. In order to cover production costs, the smartphone will come with certain apps and automatically change its advertising wallpapers.
Mr. Le Van Tuan, Deputy Head of the Authority of Radio Frequency Management, said that Vietnam is a developing country and such projects are therefore appropriate and should be encouraged. He added, though, that the advertisements and supporting services should be suitable and focused on the user’s interests.
According to Mr. Cosmora, the opinions of the Authority of Radio Frequency Management on the project will help SocialEco find a partner and implement the project.
A few years ago Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, General Director of Viettel, said he was enthusiastic about putting a smartphone within reach of every Vietnamese person. “Viettel has an ambition, that before 2020 every Vietnamese will own a smartphone,” he said back then. “If everyone owned a smartphone, Vietnam would be completely changed.” But at that time he expected the price of a “cheap” smartphone would be from $20 to $30.
