Tho Xuan Airport will be able to cater to 1.2 million passengers when upgrades are completed in January 2016.

Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has started the Civil Aviation Zone - Tho Xuan Airport project in northern Thanh Hoa province, with capital of VND600 billion ($28.04 billion) from the its investment fund. The project aims to upgrade the airport by building modern infrastructure, improving aircraft handling capacity, and enhancing safety. Completion is expected in January 2016.

The project includes a passenger terminal, hangars, lighting and signaling systems, precision landing equipment, a meteorological observation system, a car park, and ground service equipment.

The passenger terminal will be able to cater to A320 and A321 aircraft with a capacity of 600 passengers during peak times. Annual capacity is 1.2 million passengers, with the ability to expand to 2 million. It will have two gates, seven check-in counters, two security screening machines, and one baggage carousel.

The new terminal will have two floors on a total of 5,000 square meters. The first floor will be used for passenger services, including the main lobby, check-in counters, a baggage sorting area, ticket counters, a security screening area, VIP rooms, and a baggage carousel for arrivals. The second floor will be used as a waiting room for travelers and have a business class lounge and a duty free area. The apron can park three A320 and A321s.

Tho Xuan Airport is located within the administrative boundaries of Sao Vang town in Tho Xuan district, 40 kilometers from Thanh Hoa city. It has a runway of 3,200 meters, making it able to cope with Boeing B777s as well as A320 and A321s. It has been planned in accordance with the 4E standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Military Airport Level I standards. It was first put into operation as a civil airport in February 2013 and is a shared facility for both civil and military use.

The investment in the construction of the Civil Aviation Zone - Tho Xuan Airport plays an important role as it will drive overall development of the airport, meeting passenger needs and contributing to the empowerment of the local area by attracting investment, developing tourism, trade, and the local socio-economy of Thanh Hoa and the north-central region.
