Global healthcare company Abbott was recently named among the most innovative companies in 2017 by Fast Company, a US business magazine.

Abbott was placed in the Top 10 businesses in Biotech and has been named in the Top 100 Global Innovators for four consecutive years. Two of its breakthrough innovations were also recognized on the Best of What’s New list published by Popular Science magazine.

An innovative device that received many innovation awards is the AbsorbTM stent, the world’s first fully dissolving heart stent, which was researched and developed by Abbott to treat coronary artery disease (CAD).

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the US, Absorb is implanted in patients in more than 100 countries around the world. It is a first-of-its-kind device that functions like a permanent, metallic stent by opening a blocked artery in the heart, restoring blood flow, and providing relief from the symptoms of CAD.

An unrestricted vessel with restored vessel function has the potential to flex, pulse and dilate in response to various demands on the heart, based on people’s lifestyle and activities, and allows for potential future treatment options.

Absorb was introduced in Vietnam in December 2012 and has since seen an upward adoption curve, with more than 400 implantations in patients. The device fully dissolves after three years, leaving nothing behind but a restored vessel.

Professor Krishna Sudhir, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Abbott Vascular, said a healthy cardiovascular system is essential to good health and can be achieved through medical technologies that are less invasive, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.

“We will continue to invest in innovating new, more high-quality solutions that are more accessible to Vietnamese people across the spectrum of health for all stages of life, bringing them a better and fuller life,” he said.

In producing the 2017 list, Fast Company’s reporters surveyed thousands of enterprises around the globe to identify the most notable innovations of the year and trace the impact of those initiatives on business, industry, and wider society.
