Cambodia’s Lanmei Airlines has launched two direct flights to Vietnam: Phnom Penh-Hanoi and Siem Reap-Ho Chi Minh City, with a frequency of four flights a week, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, starting from today, December 20.

At the launch of the two new routes in Hanoi on December 19, representatives from Lanmei Airlines said it will also launch others to destinations in Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, India, and China shortly.

It also plans to grow its fleet from five Airbus A320 aircraft in 2018 to 20 by 2020, with a network linking the three cities of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville.

“The opening of the two new routes to Vietnam is a calculated move, as the only direct route between Hanoi and Phnom Penh will promote international economic exchange,” according to Ms. Stella Wang, Marketing Director at Lanmei Airlines. “The Ho Chi Minh City-Siem Reap route will help the airline take tourists to Angkor Wat, a destination recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.”

Each year some 6-7 million Vietnamese tourists travel abroad and Cambodia is emerging as an attractive destination, with about 1-1.2 million Vietnamese visitors each year.

Ms. Wang said that it will not compete directly with Vietnam Airlines but will have strategies to compete with low-cost carriers.

The airline will also offer cheap tickets on both routes for a limited time, costing VND900,000 ($39.6) one-way and VND1.5 million ($65.9) round-trip, excluding taxes and surcharges. Luggage up to 15 kg and hand luggage up to 7 kg is free.

Ms. Wang said that within Lanmei Airlines’ development plan, it is also keen to develop its own catering center, training center, and tourism brand.

This is a long-term plan into the future, according to Mr. Nguyen Tien Dat, Deputy General Director of the TransViet Travel Company, Lanmei Airlines’ agent in Vietnam, and the opening of the two direct routes will cut tour prices to Cambodia by about 20 per cent.

“With the opening of these two new routes, we expect to create new tourism products at attractive prices for Vietnamese tourists,” he said. “Angkor Wat’s architectural wonders in Siem Reap and the beautiful beaches in Sihanoukville are becoming the two main destinations in Cambodia’s tourism sector.”
