Local authorities expect port will boost socio-economic development and ensure national defense and security.
The Prime Minister has asked the Ministry of Transport and the Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee to appoint contractors to implement projects for the construction of an international passenger port on Phu Quoc Island.
The project has estimated investment capital of VND1.56 trillion ($73.24 million) and will be divided into two phases and constructed on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.
The passenger port will be built in Duong Dong town and allows the berthing of vessels carrying 5,000 to 6,000 passengers with a gross tonnage of 225,000 GT. It will also be able to berth cargo vessels and military vessels, which will boost local socio-economic development and ensure national defense and security.
The wharf will be 400 meters in length, of which the main one is 240 meters long and 19 meters wide, allowing ships to dock on both sides. A 1,020-meter long approach bridge will be built from shore to quay to take passengers to the island.
It is forecast that international passenger numbers passing through the port will increase by 105,000 - 190,000 annually to 2020 and 350,000 - 550,000 annually from 2020 to 2030.
The Prime Minister approved the project in November last year and assigned the Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee to cooperate with the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Planning and Investment to decide upon investment scale and the capital contribution to come from the national budget.
