by Quynh Nguyen

The Mai Linh Group, one of the biggest taxi companies in Vietnam, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the genuine distributor of French carmaker Renault to import electric motor cars for use as taxis.

Mai Linh will import the Renaults to contribute to cutting emissions and protecting the environment in major cities. Over the next five years it will import 10,000 to 20,000 electric motor cars, with domestic assembly also being considered.

The two Renault cars to be used are the Renault ZOE and the Renault Fluence ZE. The Renault ZOE uses a 22kWh battery and has a maximum distance of 240 kilometers per battery charge, while the Renault Fluence ZE also has a 22kWh battery but a maximum distance of 200 kilometers.

During the test phase Mai Linh and Renault will submit the project to relevant authorities, with the test to include about 30 cars.

According to Mr. Ho Huy, Chairman of the Board at the Mai Linh Group, this is one of the most ambitious projects the group has undertaken since its inception. Through the project it wishes to contribute to reducing environmental pollution, he said, adding that the cars also save on operating costs by 30 per cent.

In order to assemble electric cars the support of the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the French Government is required.
