Construction of the Kim Thanh fresh coconut processing plant, invested by the Ho Chi Minh City-headquartered Vina T&T Group, began on November 25 in Chau Thanh commune in the Mekong Delta’s Ben Tre province.

Deputy CEO Mr. Nguyen Dinh Muoi said it decided to establish the plant to boost its export value and promote its coconut brand in global markets. The factory will produce 25 million coconuts each year and be put into operation in 2019. It covers 10,000 sq m and has investment of VND50 billion ($2.1 million) in the first stage.

He added that raw materials will come from Ben Tre and nearby provinces such as Tra Vinh, with commitments made in price stability and exclusive purchases.

At the breaking ground ceremony, a representative from the Ben Tre Provincial People’s Committee said the plant will have the largest capacity in the province, assisting the local economy and agricultural promotion. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said that Vina T&T’s investment will partly contribute to the goal of restructuring the province’s agriculture market and boost the agriculture value and brand of Vietnam in the global market.

According to Mr. Muoi, the group exported 1,200 tons of dragon fruit, 1,100 tons of longan, 70 tons of rambutan, and 4 million coconuts in the first ten months of 2018, with value rising 38 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The Vina T&T Group began exporting fresh coconuts to the US in 2017, with a volume of 100,000 each week, which are competitive with Thai coconuts. Export turnover in 2017 was $26 million.

The group also has two fruit processing plants in the Mekong Delta’s Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces.
