City directs studies of new stations on line No. 1 to determine if retail outlets can be built.
The Urban Railway Management Board is currently researching and building criteria for investment in business premises at underground railway stations in Ho Chi Minh City.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Tin, Deputy Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, has requested the Management Board work with related departments to prepare detailed plans for stations on the No.1 line (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien). They are to specify those of a scale suitable for commercial centers, supermarkets, and convenience stores.
“The call for investment in business premises at the stations should be implemented widely, publicly and transparently,” the City People’s Committee has stated. This will encourage local and foreign investors to participate, creating the financial resources for operations and maintenance on line No.1.
According to the Management Board, retail centers will provide convenient services for railway passengers and rentals will contribute to offsetting some of the cost of building the railway. Many countries around the world do likewise.
Begun in 2012, the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien line has total investment of more than $2.4 billion. It is approximately 20 km long, passing through Districts 1, 2, 9, Binh Thanh and Thu Duc in the city and Di An district in neighboring Binh Duong province. It is expected to be completed in 2019 and put into operation in 2020.
