Vietnam assessed highly by Japan in the field of software and digital content.
A partnership between the two nations is seen as ideal, as Vietnam is considered one of the leading countries in the region in the field of software and digital content while Japan is the second biggest investor in this field.
To strengthen cooperation in information technology (IT) and mobile software applications between Vietnam and Japan, on March 24, the Vietnam-Japan Networking Seminar and Business Matching on Content Industry conference was held in Hanoi by Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency in collaboration with the ASEAN-Japan Promotion Centre for Trade, Investment and Tourism (AJC), Japan JOGA Game Association and Vietnam Software Association (VINASA). The event aimed to connect Vietnamese and Japanese businesses in the field of digital content.
"The Japanese government is very interested in the development of Vietnam's IT but human resources in this field are still weak," said Mr Yoshikuni Ohnishi, Secretary General of AJC, at the conference. "In my opinion, Vietnam needs to invest further in the IT sector, especially in the training of human resources. Other ASEAN countries are also in the race so Vietnam should not be left behind."
According to the Foreign Investment Agency, despite the growth in revenue, the industry of digital content and online gaming mainly belongs to foreign game developers. In 2013, revenue from online games in Vietnam reached $237 million, ranking 6th in Asia after Japan, China and Taiwan. VNG Corporation, the biggest Vietnamese firm in this sector is assessed at $1 billion. However, 40 per cent of online game revenue in 2014 belonged to foreign firms while domestic companies are still only breaking even or operating at a loss.
Mr. Bui Huy Son, General Director of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade), Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises have the most favorable conditions for cooperation because Japan has signed many frameworks and partnership agreements with Vietnam. Along with their bilateral legal framework, the two countries are currently negotiating Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and cooperation within ASEAN +6. This shows the determination of the two governments in supporting economic cooperation and trade between the two countries.
Japan is still the second largest investor in Vietnam while digital content receives interest from both governments. Mr. Son hoped that both Japanese and Vietnamese businesses would promote cooperation and investment in order to contribute to growth.
"We are very pleased that over the years, Vietrade has assisted many domestic businesses in entering Japan, such as at the Tokyo Game Show or to research Japanese digital content. We are always happy to assist Vietnamese businesses approach and develop business cooperation with Japan, "Mr. Son said.
