When machinery line No. 2 opens in July and inspections and testing are completed, plant is expected to add significantly to the national power grid.
On the afternoon of March 20 the AES-TKV Mong Duong Power Company celebrated the inauguration of machinery line No. 1 at the Mong Duong II Thermo-electricity Plant.
This is the first build-operate-transfer (BOT) thermo-electricity project and the largest in Vietnam. Machinery line No. 1 has a capacity of 560MW and is one of two machinery lines for the plant. It operated officially on March 4, three months sooner than scheduled.
Started on September 2011 in Cam Pha, Quang Ninh province, the plant has two machinery lines with a total capacity of 1,129MW and investment of $2 billion. After finishing construction of both lines and testing the plant at the end of this year, Mong Duong II is expected to produce 7.6 billion kWh of electricity each year and will be transferred to the government after 25 years.
The plant is invested by the the AES Corporation from the US, with 51 per cent of capital, POSCO Power from South Korea, with 30 per cent, and the China Investment Corporation from China, with 19 per cent. The group of companies is called the AES-TKV Mong Duong Power Company Limited.
When machinery line No. 2 comes into official operations in July, as schedule, Mong Duong II will contribute significantly to the development of the national power grid and also to Quang Ninh province. Success at Mong Duong II will provide the conditions for the AES-TKV Mong Duong Power Company Limited to implement its project building the Mong Duong III Thermoelectricity Plant in Dam Ha district, Quang Ninh province.
