Money gained could fund construction of Long Thanh International Airport near HCMC.
Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang has sent a proposal to the Prime Minister on signing an Operation and Management (O&M) contract between the government and investors on partly or fully operating Phu Quoc Airport over a given period of time.
According to the Ministry of Transport (MoT), such an arrangement would provide better services and the State could use the funds to invest in a number of key projects and ease the pressure on the State budget.
MoT leaders proposed the PM approve a contract for Phu Quoc Airport signed with domestic investors, with the money gained used to fund the construction of Long Thanh International Airport near Ho Chi Minh City.
If approved, MoT agencies would then conduct a valuation of Phu Quoc Airport. If only one investor expressed interest, the Ministry would consider whether they meet the requirements, or would hold an auction if more than one investor expressed interest.
In early March the T & T Group first expressed a desire to operate Phu Quoc Airport. Deputy Transport Nguyen Hong Truong revealed that the Vingroup had also expressed interest.
