Noluma to introduce packaging solutions for milk producers

Light-protection packaging protects nutritional values in Vietnamese milk products.

US-based packaging manufacturer Noluma will participate for the first time at the 2nd International Exhibition on Milk and Dairy Products (Vietnam Dairy 2019), to be held between May 30 and June 2 in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7, with the aim of introducing its light protection technology for dairy producers.

The company was established in 2018 and is headquartered in the US. Early this year, it debuted patented technology that measures packaging’s ability to protect contents from indoor light damage with more accuracy and efficiency than existing methods.

The company aims to raise awareness about preventing the harmful effects of light through the industry’s adoption of light protected packaging, which then helps to preserve freshness and nutritional values in dairy products.

The “Packaged Foods Should Be Kept in the Dark: Consumers Shouldn’t Be” report noted that light of any kind - whether in the grocery store, the home, or in refrigerators - can cause food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products to degrade faster, often before their expiration date. With packaged products, especially milk and other dairy products, exposure to light affects taste, freshness, and nutritional value.

At Noluma, food scientists determined that after only two hours of exposure to light, typically found in retail dairy packaging, milk begins to lose its Vitamin A. After 16 hours of such light exposure, less than half of Vitamin A (49 per cent) remains in non-fat milk. And after 12 weeks of light exposure in a retail setting, UHT milk’s nutritional value declines dramatically. This poses an urgent need for a solution that minimizes the negative effect of light.

Understanding this demand, Noluma developed a technology that allows businesses to quickly renovate their packaging designs. Its experts can measure nutrient changes caused by light exposure 99 per cent more efficiently and accurately than conducting a standard evaluation with a panel of expert taste testers.

Noluma is the first company to develop technology to assess, measure, and certify light protection in packaging for businesses. When consumers see the Noluma logo, they know that the product will not be degraded by light and will maintain its freshness and overall quality through the product’s full shelf life - whether edible oils, cosmetics, dairy, or other degradable products.
