Subscribers should be able to keep number by late 2016 or early 2017 following tests by providers.
The Ministry of Information and Communications discussed technical issues on September 11 with mobile providers regarding mobile subscribers keeping their phone number when changing providers.
The three leading providers in Vietnam - Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone - expressed a readiness while the smaller service providers asked that implementation be postponed.
The three giants agreed to conduct a test at the end of the year while Vietnamobile asked that any test be delayed until December 2017. GTel failed to send a representative to the meeting.
Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Pham Hong Hai was pleased with the result of the meeting as the agreement of the three giants meant the service would be available to 90 per cent of subscribers.
The Ministry directed providers to run the test and connect their systems to the Ministry’s network switch center no later than December 2016, so that the service can be available to subscribers in late 2016 or early 2017 at the latest.
