New training program to equip local staff with skills needed to take up senior positions.
After six years in Vietnam, Piaggio Vietnam expects a Vietnamese national will be its Division Director by 2016.
According to Mr. Costantino Sambuy, General Director of Piaggio Vietnam, the company is conducting its Piaggio Way program, training young Vietnamese staff and senior personnel. The program is a part of its local leader development plan.
He said that the company, when newly formed, had skilled workers but the quality of its senior personnel was inadequate there were no suitable candidates for the position of Division Director. "With the Piaggio Way training program, though, we will have a Vietnamese Division Director next year," he said. "I hope that someday a Vietnamese national will replace me."
Piaggio Vietnam was established in 2009 with investment capital of $30 million. The factory is its third largest in the world, after its factories in Pisa, Italia, and Maharashtra, India. After its Vietnamese facility began manufacturing scooters in mid-2009, Piaggio Vietnam then built another factory with a capacity of 200,000 engines per year. It also established the Asia Product Research and Development Center (R&D) at the Vinh Phuc Industrial Zone, which has closely coordinated with its Italian headquarters with the aim of developing scooter models and engines for the Asian market.
