Samsung officially announced the cause of the Galaxy Note7 explosions on January 23, via a public event broadcast live on YouTube.

It also introduced new safety measures to ensure that similar incidents will not occur in the future.

Seven hundred of its employees tested 200,000 phones and inspected 30,000 batteries, in an exercise organized by UL and TUV Rheinland Exponent.

Two errors were discovered in the batteries, which are produced by Samsung SDI and Amperex Technology.

The first was detected in batteries manufactured by Samsung SDI. Errors in the upper right corner of the battery may lead to short circuits. The battery is larger than the space inside of the phone, which also has a curved screen design. This results in the electrode bending easily and coming into contact with the battery to trigger a short circuit.

The second error, in Amperex Technology’s manufacturing, relates to the production line. Samsung identified a manufacturing defect in the welds of the battery, which make it open easily and cause the battery to ignite in certain circumstances.

Samsung confirmed the cause was not related to the phone’s software or any of its hardware.
