Port to play key role in development of south-central area once in operation late next year.
The Vinh Tan General Port JSC under the Pacific Group kicked off construction of the Vinh Tan General Port in the south-central province of Binh Thuan on April 16.
With total investment of over $2.29 trillion ($106 million) the project, on 141 hectares of water surface area, will have two phases of construction.
Phase 1, which is expected to be completed and put into operation in late 2016, includes the building of two general wharfs that can berth vessels of up to 30,000 deadweight tons (DWT) and one additional wharf that can berth vessels of up to 3,000 DWT. In the second phase the project will receive investment according to actual demand, in order to create the necessary conditions for the number of vessels coming in and out of the port.
The project targets to meet demand in the shipping of trade and play an important role in promoting socio-economic development in Binh Thuan and neighboring provinces. The port is included in the Vietnam Seaport System Development Planning for 2020 and Orientation for 2030, approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in June last year.
