Star apples head to US

Vietnam has become the first country permitted to export star apples to the US, after ten years of negotiations, with the first batch from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang exported to the country on December 26. Some 56.34 ha of star apples in the province have been designated for export to the US. Together with litchi, longan, rambutan and dragon fruit, star apples are the fifth Vietnamese fruit allowed to be sold in the country.

New enterprises up 15%

As many as 153,307 enterprises have been established or resumed operations this year. While 126,859 are newly-registered enterprises, 26,448 resumed operation after a period of suspension, according to the Business Registration Agency. Registered capital of the newly-established enterprises totaled VND1,300 trillion ($57 billion), up 15.2 per cent in number and 45.4 per cent in capital against 2016, with the real estate sector accounting for nearly one-third of new capital. Each new enterprise has VND10.2 billion ($443.478) in registered capital on average, an increase of 26.2 per cent year-on-year.

Da Nang fireworks festival set for April - June

The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) 2018 will take place in the central city from April 29 to June 30 next year, the city’s People’s Committee announced. Themed “The Legend of Bridges”, the festival is expected to feature spectacular performances by seven international teams from Poland, France, the US, Italy, Hong Kong, Sweden, Portugal, and Vietnam.

Wood exports exceed targets

Vietnam’s wood exports will reach an estimated $7.6 billion in 2017, surpassing the annual target of $7.5 billion set by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. According to preliminary figures from Vietnam Customs, from January 1 to December 15, the wood sector grossed more than $7.2 billion in export turnover, which is expected to top $8.5 billion by year’s end, including furniture exports.

PM bans drink and junk food sales at schools

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has imposed a ban on the sale of all types of soft drinks at schools around the country in order to improve children’s health. Advertisements for soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, and unhealthy food are banned at schools.

Logistics booking system launched

The IFreight JSC officially launched its Online Logistics Booking System on December 26, which offers opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises to improve their competitiveness by optimizing their logistics operations. The system includes a website and a mobile app allowing businesses to select carriers from a list of over 40 and determine the lowest rates, which they can then book online.

Industry Bank of Korea’s Hanoi branch raises capital

The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) issued Decision No. 2702/QD-NHNN on December 26 on a change in capital within the license of the Hanoi Branch of the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK). The SBV Governor approved the change, which increased capital to $90 million. The Decision takes effect from the date of signing.
