Urban railway authority proposes shopping mall be built under station on HCMC's Metro Line No. 1.
The Management Authority for Urban Railways in Ho Chi Minh City has submitted a proposal to the City’s Provincial People’s Committee about building an underground shopping mall below the Ben Thanh Train Station (on Metro Line No. 1) and Le Loi Street in District 1.
The mall is expected to cover 45,000 sq m, with shops and restaurants on 18,000 sq m and the lobby and other venues on 21,000 sq m, with the remaining 6,000 sq m being used for other purposes.
The mall will be the first underground commercial area on the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien railway line. Its construction is expected to bring many benefits to the local area, becoming a focal point and encouraging people to take a trip on the urban railway.
The Toshin Development Co. from Japan already has its eyes on the project and has proposed it be the main investor. If other companies express a similar interest a tender will be held.
If the project goes according to plan the shopping mall will open in 2023.
