Public opinion sways authorities in reassigning project.
Following much public protest about plans to build a five-star hotel in Thong Nhat Park, the Hanoi People's Committee has decided to discontinue the project and officially approved an alternative plan to build an underground parking station on the site, with investment of VND100 billion ($4.7 million).
The five-star SAS Hotel Hanoi project was licensed to the SAS Hanoi Royal Hotel Company, a joint venture between Hanoi Tourist and the Singapore-based SIH Investment Ltd. However, using land in the popular Thong Nhat Park for a hotel was met with public and scientific disapproval, which prompted the local government to change plans for the site.
The parking station has three storeys and an area of 10,000 sq m, with each storey being 5,600 sq m and able to park 390 motor cars. On the ground level will be a green space on 7,585 sq m, with a road area of 2,230 sq m and 266 sq m for ancillary facilities.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hung, Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, said that authorities took note of the opinions of experts and the public in approving the plan for the underground parking station. "The purpose of the city is to bring the greatest benefits to the community while meeting the necessities of daily life," he added.
The Hanoi People's Committee has assigned the Hanoi Parking Company to prepare construction plans. Mr. Hung asked that city leaders create favorable conditions for the project's investor.
