The Van Don International Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh is scheduled to open to air traffic in December, according to project investor the Sun Group.

The group also revealed it would submit a plan outlining the airport’s opening schedule to the Prime Minister in July for approval.

In an interview with VET, Mr. Dang Minh Truong, Deputy Chairman and General Director of the Sun Group, said it invested in the VND7.5 trillion ($333.3 million) airport because it recognizes that infrastructure development must be one step ahead of overall development in the region. “The investment is not aimed at profit-making and is only part of the group’s business strategy,” he said.

Located in Doan Ket commune in Van Don district, the airport covers 288 ha and is the first in Vietnam to operate under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) form.

Its capacity is 5 million passengers a year, in which the first phase can cater to 2.5 million. The group expects it to welcome about 500,000 passengers in its first year.

Under Decision No. 497/QD-BGTVT from the Ministry of Transport dated March 15, Van Don will be an international airport catering to both civilian and military flights.

Construction began in 2015 and 90 per cent of its runways have now been completed. Built under 4E International Airport standards, it will be able to cater to large aircraft such as A380s and B777s, making it the equal of other major international airports in Vietnam, such as Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, Noi Bai in Hanoi, and Da Nang and Can Tho.

Upon completion, Van Don International Airport will be operated by the Sun Group rather than Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). The group established the Van Don Investment and Development Joint Stock Company last April for the task.

The number of visitors to Quang Ninh increased 26 per cent year-on-year in the first five months of 2018, to nearly 6.6 million, according to figures from the Quang Ninh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The province expects to welcome 12 million visitors this year, including 5 million foreign arrivals, and generate tourism revenue of around VND22 trillion ($970 million).
