An international seminar entitled “Urban Heritage Preservation - A Key to Sustainable Development” was organized in Hanoi on March 21 by Dulux Professional from AkzoNobel in cooperation with Architecture magazine from the Vietnam Association of Architects.

The seminar aimed to create a forum for experts and architects to get together to share experiences in protecting heritages around the world and in Vietnam. AkzoNobel offered a number of innovative paints and coatings products that are effective solutions in helping preserve the original beauty of historical heritages around the country. The seminar attracted more than 200 developers and professionals in the field.

“Heritages are precious assets of any nation,” Ms. Pamela Phua, General Director of AkzoNobel Paints Vietnam, told the seminar. “They are not only historical and cultural symbols of the country but also hooks to attract tourists, contributing to local economic growth. By protecting these symbolic structures, we can inherit and continue to save the country’s culture for future generation as well as create momentum for the development of tourism and the economy.”

“By collaborating with many different parties, including international institutional partners as well as local government authorities, AkzoNobel is committed to hugely supporting the revitalization of Vietnamese historical heritages nationwide.”

Mr. Luigi Croce, Chairman of the Venice Architects Association, shared his own experiences through heritage preservation case studies in Italy. “Heritage preservation is more than just ‘keep history alive’; it revitalizes local economies and builds a sense of belonging, pride and identity,” he said. “In Italy, we have gained various successes in preserving symbolic structures by reusing and adapting them to the modern necessities. With experiences gained from these projects, I hope to accompany Vietnam’s developers and business sector in building a proper master plan for the country heritages in the new wave of development.”

“Heritage preservation is meaningful not only for cultural and economic growth but also to the identity of a nation,” agreed Mr. Pham Tuan Long, Vice President of the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee in Hanoi. Heritage preservation as a task requiring a joint effort from all sectors, he said. AkzoNobel is a good example of joint efforts to preserve heritage in Vietnam. He hopes that the collaboration between the AkzoNobel and developers to work on this with innovative technologies in preserving and reconstructing heritages will continue in the long term and bring more values to the community.

Besides the seminar, Dulux Professional has sponsored a series of events on urban heritage preservation held by SCE Project Asia and IUAV, including the “Cities of the Future & Heritage Preservation” event with representatives from the Vietnamese and Italian institutional, academic, and professional world.
