Many streets around city full of people out to enjoy Christmas Eve on December 24.
People flooded into the area around Hoan Kiem Lake and nearby St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hanoi from late afternoon until midnight on December 24, creating traffic jams that lasted for hours.
By 7pm the fountain at the top of Hoan Kiem Lake thronged with people. Routes into the city center were clogged, with many then choosing to make the trip on foot. Even then it was slow going, with people inching along patiently to their destination.
Traffic jams were also found outside of the city center, along Minh Khai and Nguyen Trai. By 7pm Nguyen Trai Street, location of Royal City, was full of cars and motorbikes.
Indoors were no better, with many choosing to escape from the stuffy air.
Parking lots sprung up everywhere, with business also slowing down traffic. The price at some parking lots in the city center was VND40,000 to VND50,000.
This parking lot in Nguyen Trai Street was bursting at the seams. The area under the Cat Linh - Ha Dong urban railway line was turned into a parking lot by local people charging VND30,000 per motorbike.
Regardless, the evening was a wonderful time and many people enjoyed being outside on the mild winter’s night. A similar atmosphere is expected for one or two more nights.
