A number of districts in Hanoi affected by latest break in clear water pipeline.
The clean water pipeline from the Da River, near Hanoi, broke at Km26 on Thang Long Boulevard at 2pm on July 21. Water supply to 70,000 households in the capital’s Hoang Mai district, Bac Tu Liem district, and Nam Tu Liem district has been affected.
Technicians from the Vietnam Clean Water Investment and Construction Corporation (Viwaco) have been trying to identify the cause of the breakage and repair it. According to Viwaco Director Nguyen Anh Viet the water pressure has become very low and supply may be cut for a short period as repairs are undertaken.
There have been a series of incidents involving the pipeline, with the Ministry of Public Security initiating prosecutions against those responsible. Nine members of the Board of Management of the project building the pipeline have been charged, along with supervisors and consultants, for violating regulations on construction.
The pipeline runs though 10 km of weak soil and frequently ruptures. In searching for a long-term solution, the city has requested the immediate building of a second pipeline.
