The first open pharmaceutical data bank in Vietnam has been launched at the www.drugbank.vn website by the Drug Administration of Vietnam (DAV) at the Ministry of Health.

The data bank provides information on more than 10,000 drugs and nearly 41,000 licensed manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacists.

It will help regulators keep a close watch on drug development and pharmaceutical businesses’ operations to monitor drug quality, delivery, and prices.

The data bank also helps doctors and physicians stay abreast of drug availability and obtain full information for proper treatment.

People can access the data bank to obtain information on all currently circulating drugs and their effective use, as well as determine the origin of particular drugs and their prices and pharmacies that meet Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) standards.

It took three years to complete the data bank, under a joint effort by the DAV, the Food and Drug Administration in the US, Canada’s Ministry of Health, and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The open data bank is a significant milestone in the management of drugs in particular and the pharmaceutical sector as a whole, according to DAV Director Vu Tuan Cuong.

It also expresses the DAV’s efforts to apply information technology to meet the needs of regulators and pharmaceutical enterprises, doctors, and citizens, kicking off a new era in drug management with modern and transparent technology and contributing to the country’s e-government development. It will also help raise public awareness on the safe and effective use of drugs.
