US, Israeli and German experts meet with officials in bid to determine the cause of mass fish deaths on central and north-central coast.
Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha worked with international experts from the US, Israel, and Germany on May 2 to determine the reasons behind the mass deaths of fish along the central and north-central coast.
Professor Roberto Mayerle, Director of the Research and Technology Centre Westcoast of Kiel University in Germany, said that after working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) the expert delegation would then work with the Ministry of Science and Technology.
If Vietnam agrees, it would then invite more experts and equipment to help identify the cause.
Minister Ha said that MoNRE expects the immediate attention of the experts will be on assessing wastewater from factories being discharged directly on to Vung Ang Beach. He also expects the expert delegation will examine the water quality in the region.
The National Institute for Food Control concluded on May 2 that the heavy metal content in 12 seafood samples collected on the coast of Ha Tinh province was under limits.
On May 3 Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc pushed all related agencies to determine the cause of the mass fish deaths. Any violation, he said, would be punished.
