A thousand workers at Regina Miracle taken to hospital on December 28 after lunch in company canteen.
More than 1,000 workers at Regina Miracle at the VSIP Industrial Park in northern Hai Phong city were taken to hospitals around the city on December 28, presenting symptoms of food poisoning such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and diarrhea.
The first workers to fall ill were taken to a hospital in Thuy Nguyen district. The hospital can only treat 150 patients at a time so as more people fell ill they were taken to Viet Tiep Hospital, Ngo Quyen Hospital, Hai Phong Hospital, and others.
Initial reports are that that there were three shifts for lunch on the day. One to two hours later many workers began to exhibit signs of food poisoning. Some said that they noticed problems with the food while they were eating, as the rice was more yellowish than normal.
Ms. Pham Thu Xanh, Director of the Hai Phong Department of Health, told local media that hospitals were doing their best to treat all patients. “The uncertified canteen of the company has been closed down by Hai Phong authorities, and we will wait for an official report,” she said.
Regina Miracle is 100 per cent invested by a Hong Kong company and specializes in apparel production. The company has only recently opened and is in a trial production phase. It signed a contract with the Bao Chau Company to provide meals for its 2,700 workers.
