The ninth Conference on Traditional Medicine of Countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region will take place on September 5 and 6 in Hanoi, organized by the Ministry of Health.

With the theme “Traditional medicine in caring for the community’s health”, the conference will introduce participating countries to Vietnam’s traditional medicine and its application in healthcare and treatment as well as discuss cooperation in traditional medicine between countries in the region, particularly in traditional medicine and herbal medicine preservation and development.

Participants will also introduce their latest products and achievements in traditional medicine and share experience and information relating to using traditional medicine in public healthcare.

Under the framework of the conference, there will be an exhibition on traditional medicine products of countries in the sub-region and a showcase for traditional medicine practitioners to demonstrate their traditional therapies.

The conference will welcome about 250 participants from the Greater Mekong Sub-region, some ASEAN countries, and some international organizations in Vietnam.

It is expected to help Vietnam learn of the methods and experiences of other countries and promote cooperation between Vietnam and countries in the region.

A healthcare system using traditional medicine has been applied all over Vietnam. Public traditional medicine hospitals have been set up and are operating in all 63 cities and provinces nationwide. An estimated 30 per cent of patients are treated by traditional medicine or are treated by traditional medicine in combination with modern medicine, according to the ministry.
