Government set targets for health insurance coverage from now to 2020.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Duong has signed a decision on providing health insurance to people in 63 cities and provinces in the 2015-2020 period. The target set by the government is that by the end of this year 75.4 per cent of the population will have health insurance and this will increase over the years. By 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, the targets are 78, 79.8, 81.4, 82.5 and 84.3 per cent, respectively.
Some provinces have had high targets set, such as Dien Bien and Hoa Binh (99 per cent), Tuyen Quang and Lao Cai (98.6 per cent), Ha Giang and Thai Nguyen (98.2 per cent), and Son La (98 per cent).
Provincial People's Committees in these provinces have been assigned responsibility for the matter. They will direct their provincial Departments of Health and related parties to implement the plan and create the conditions for people to obtain health insurance and receive full benefits. Many resources will be mobilized to support people. Initially, 30 per cent of insurance fees will be waived for people from poor households.
At the same time, Vietnam Social Insurance will direct local social insurance agencies to increase insurance coverage and cooperate with local parties to raise awareness about health insurance.
As a result of a prior project on providing health insurance to the entire population, by the end of 2014 71.6 per cent of the population were covered.
