Conference told that HIV/AIDS prevention and control measures facing a number of issues.
A meeting held last week in central Thua Thien Hue province, attended by experts from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and departments of health in Vietnam’s 63 cities and provinces, heard that 5,500 more people were identified as carrying HIV in the first six months of this year.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Long, Director of the MoH’s Department of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, said that preventive measures in the last six months have experienced some limitations, as the number of condoms and hypodermic needles delivered free of charge was less than in the same period last year.
Mr. Long proposed a plan for the second half of the year, including expanding treatment and prevention services, improving treatment with antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, increasing HIV identification measures, and completing a plan for supplying ARV therapy.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, Deputy Minister of Health, asked all relevant bolides to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention and to focus on prevention as the primary measure.
Methods at HIV/AIDS prevention and control centers must also be developed to supply diversified services, he stressed.
Figures from MoH show that during the 2001-2005 period the country saved 150,000 people living with HIV from death and saved 10,000 children from being transmitted with HIV.
