Permits valid from October and available to Vietnamese citizens and foreigners with a permanent residence card and valid domestic driving license.
The Vietnam Road Administration and the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Departments of Transport have begun issuing International Driving Permits (IDPs), which will be valid from October and recognized in 85 countries. Vietnamese citizens and foreigners in Vietnam with a permanent residence card and a valid domestic driving license are eligible to apply.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quyen, Deputy Head of the Vietnam Road Administration, said that the issuance of IDPs is being implemented in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City initially and then elsewhere at a later date as the necessary equipment becomes available. “The IDPs have anti-piracy security, so provinces require time to purchase the equipment needed,” he was quoted by saying.
The cost of an IDP is expected to be VND150,000 ($6), issued five working days after an application is received, and has a validity of no longer than three years, under the provisions of the Vienna Convention applicable to the 85 countries.
The license is not valid for driving in Vietnam.
