The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam will present the free Garage Concert No.18 featuring “The Flying Clefs” quintet at 8pm on December 28 at the Japan Foundation, 27 Quang Trung Street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi.

Taking place in the courtyard, the one-hour musical event is among a series of outdoor classical music concerts that aim to provide musical diversity in Hanoi through the introduction of worldwide music played by distinguished Vietnamese musicians. The program features “The Falcon Song”, a solo violin piece composed by Vietnamese composer Dam Linh, “Wind plays the flute”, another solo violin piece composed by Japanese composer Miyamoto Emiri, and the Piano quintet No.2 in A major Op. 81, composed by Antonio Dvorak.

“The Flying Clefs” were established in 2018 by violinist Nguyen Thien Minh, joined by young musicians recently returning to Vietnam after years of studying and working abroad.

Minh, 23, decided to let an opportunity to play in international symphony orchestras go, returning to Vietnam to develop classical music. He studied at the Barratt-Due Music Academy in Norway at the age of 17 and was the first Vietnamese to study solo violin in the country.

He was invited to join the Beethoven Fest in Germany in 2009 and the Valdes Summer Festival in Norway in 2009 and 2010, and played with the El Sistema Orchestra from Venezuela in Norway in 2011. He has performed in Spain, Denmark, Brazil, Sweden and various cities in Norway with the Oslo Camerata Orchestra and has performed with other major Norwegian orchestras such as the Den Norsk Opera Orketer, the Oslo Philharmonic, and the Nordic Philharmonic, etc.

The courtyard can cater to around 200 people at a time, and free tickets (a maximum of two per person) are available from 12pm on December 21 at the Japan Foundation, which is open from 9am to 6pm daily except Sunday.
