Flooding most severe for 40 years, damaging roads and houses.
For the last few days northern Quang Ninh province has experienced heavy rainfall and severe flooding, with many houses collapsing, Chairman of the People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Long said. Cam Pha city suffered the greatest damage, with seven fatalities due to flooding in Mong Duong, Cao Thang, Cao Xanh. and Hong Ha communes.
The road into Mong Duong commune was blocked by a landslide. From 7pm on July 24 to 7pm on July 27 the amount of rainfall in Cua Ong commune and Co To Island was over 700 millimeters in each.
Authorities said it was the heaviest rainfall for the last 40 years. Many roads in residential areas were underwater. The water level at the Cam Ngam Market in Mong Duong commune was two-meters high and many goods were destroyed. The Deputy Chairman of the Mong Duong People’s Committee, Pham Ngoc Lu, estimated losses at over VND15 billion ($687,450).
On Co To Island, heavy rains and high seas forced 2,500 tourists to head to shore. Vessels were not allowed to leave harbor. Many shops and Co To Market had to close because of a lack of goods. Electricity, water and telecommunications, however, were still working.
People on Co To Island are familiar with such weather conditions and storing food is a common practice.
