Increasing numbers of Vietnamese people now have health cover.
The latest report from Vietnam Social Insurance shows that as at May 31 there were 64.6 million people (71.4 per cent of the country’s population) with health insurance, for an increase of 2.7 million people since the end of the first quarter.
The social insurance sector organized healthcare treatment for people with social insurance at 2,089 central health facilities and 9,496 commune health stations around the country.
As at May 31 health insurance had earned VND19.589 trillion ($898.74 million) with VND17.631 trillion ($808.91 million) being outlaid.
Many people are still avoiding paying health insurance, however, and more than 40 per cent of companies also fail to do so. With the implementation of programs on hunger eradication and poverty reduction, many communes and districts have come out of their difficult economic circumstances, which has cut the number of people registering for health insurance cards.
Vietnam Social Insurance has set a target of 75 per cent of the population registering for health insurance within the next seven months and will try to ensure the rights of insured people and the effective use of funds while preventing any abuse of health insurance.
This month it will simplify procedures for families to participate in health insurance. They will not have to submit different documents to authorities to prove the identity of family members, which will create the conditions for them to register for health insurance.
