Boats to replace hydrofoils from November with ticket prices remaining unchanged.
Costing around $1 million each, new Greenlines DP speedboats will be used on the river route from Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau from November, replacing the hydrofoil service.
“With a speed of 55 - 60 km/h the boats will take one hour and 15 minutes to complete the trip,” said Mr. Tran Song Hai, General Director of Greenlines DP. The boats run smoothly, are energy efficient, and don’t create waves that may swamp small fishing vessels, he said. Tickets are expected to remain the same as for the hydrofoil trip, at around $11.
During the test run Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Nhat appreciated the research into and building of the new boats, as the hydrofoils often experienced problems. “We want the speedboats to come into service as soon as possible,” he said, adding that the government is currently looking at developing water transport around Vietnam, as putting its 17,000 km of inland waterways to better use will greatly reduce road traffic.
The boats were designed and manufactured by domestic engineers but the two engines are imported.
