Orange ASEAN Factory, an intense three-week sustainability consultancy program for talented young professionals, entrepreneurs, and Master’s students from the Netherlands and Southeast Asia, is being hosted for the first time in Vietnam by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Ho Chi Minh City in cooperation with global paints and coatings firm AkzoNobel.

This is the sixth edition of the program initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is the second time AkzoNobel has supported the initiative, which focuses on improving skills and knowledge on sustainability among young people.

The program is taking place between April 1 and 19 at AkzoNobel’s office in Ho Chi Minh City with the theme “Sustainable Urban Development”. It offers a chance for students, entrepreneurs, and young professionals to learn how to use entrepreneurial skills and design thinking to solve societal issues while delivering direct business value.

Orange ASEAN Factory 2019 functions as a funnel, moving from societal issues to sustainable business solutions. There are 30 Dutch and ASEAN students and young professionals majoring in various field such as engineering, marketing, sociology, etc. in attendance. Over the course of the three weeks, they will work in six dedicated teams on business cases with real-life issues, designing innovative solutions for sustainability challenges in Vietnam in particular and in the region in general.

Professional sustainability consultants, specialists, and designers will guide them on identifying and preparing the ground work for innovative solutions. Some of the key topics up for discussion are school hygiene, waste treatment, sustainable floating fish farming in the Mekong Delta, and solutions for a circular economy.

Beside improving participants’ knowledge on sustainability and consultancy skills, the program also aims at expanding their networks and helping them gain international collaboration experience with other Dutch and ASEAN participants.

As the host and one of the mentors, AkzoNobel is sharing its experience and expertise in building a sustainable company inside-out. “AkzoNobel wants to not only deliver sustainable products but also build a sustainable company in a sustainable economy and community for everyone,” said Ms. Pamela Phua, General Director of AkzoNobel Vietnam.

“We already have sustainable products and services, and work in cooperation with other sectors to raise awareness on the issue. However, we think those are on the top; the root is in the mindset of the young generation, who will lead our economy in the coming years. In accompanying this sixth edition of Orange ASEAN Factory, we hope to seed sustainable thinking in participants and develop their knowledge and skills, guiding them towards making meaningful contributions to Vietnam and the region.”

In this 2019 program, AkzoNobel will take participants on a factory tour to provide more practical knowledge about sustainable production at the leading paints and coatings company.

“It is good to see efforts from companies like AkzoNobel to encourage the young generation of Vietnam, the Netherlands, and the ASEAN region to find solutions to sustainability challenges,” said Dr. Carel Richter, Consult General of the Netherlands in Ho Chi Minh City.

“These talented young people will together develop innovative solutions for dealing with waste, plastic, packaging, and many more issues. During the three weeks, the students are hosted by AkzoNobel in their inspiring office building. I am proud to be working together with AkzoNobel, an outstanding Dutch company in Vietnam that contributes to sustainable development goals.”
