Flight delayed after passenger mistakes emergency exit for toilet.
While passengers were boarding VietJet Air flight VJ175 for a 4.30pm take-off on April 17, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chuong, aged 43 from Hanoi, suddenly opened the emergency exit, with the evacuation slide automatically unfolding.
The flight was delayed until 7.30pm, after the evacuation slide was fully removed from the aircraft. Given its removal, passenger numbers had to be reduced from 202 to 151 for the flight to meet safety standards.
Mr. Chuong claimed he was looking for the toilet and confused the emergency door with the toilet door. A representative from Vietjet Air said the carrier would give VND300,000 ($13.9) to each passenger who missed the flight or refund the entire ticket price to those who chose not to then take the flight.
The Northern Airports Authority is now investigating the incident and will make a decision on the penalty imposed on Mr. Chuong. Under existing rules his actions may see him fined between VND10 million ($463.2) and VND20 million ($926.4).
