Health technology company Philips Vietnam supported the Red River Run held on April 21 by Newborns Vietnam, which was aimed at raising funds to reduce neonatal mortality and promote the health of newborns and mothers in Vietnam.

Recognizing the alignment of Newborns Vietnam’s cause with its goal of improving healthcare access to 400 million people in underserved communities a year by 2030 and its ongoing target of reducing child mortality and improving maternal health through innovation, Philips joined the Red River Run as its main sponsor.

Held in Hanoi, the Red River Run was a 300-km non-stop relay from the Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital to the Lao Cai Obstetrics Hospital and Newborn Unit in the northern province of Lao Cai, with the aim of raising much-needed funds for preventing neonatal mortality.

There are around 17,000 newborn deaths each year in Vietnam, accounting for 52 per cent of all deaths of children under the age of 5 in the country. Disparities in healthcare access, resource constraints in healthcare personnel and a lack of trained specialists are the key reasons for the poor outcomes in neonatal care.

Funds raised will go to various initiatives, including a newborns training program at nine hospitals in Hanoi and life-saving equipment at the Lao Cai Obstetrics Hospital and Newborn Unit.

Mr. Hugo Luik, Country Manager of Philips Vietnam, said it takes the issue of infant deaths seriously and strongly believes that mothers and infants deserve the best care possible before, during, and after birth. “We are proud to work with Newborns Vietnam and be part of their cause to provide good, safe and consistent care for mothers and children who need it most,” he added.

Mr. Suzanna Lubran, Executive Director of Newborns Vietnam, said that every kilometer run raised awareness and funds to support Newborns Vietnam’s hospital partners develop greater capacity to give every baby the best possible start in life.

Philips aims to improve people’s health globally, as an advocate for mother and child care solutions, and is committed to providing innovative, clinically-proven solutions with the broadest range of support through every stage and each transition. These include maternal and fetal monitoring during pregnancy, neonatal positioning, calming and soothing solutions for neonatal ICU, and feeding and monitoring for the transition home.

Newborns Vietnam strives to address healthcare access issues by working with multiple partners, such as the National Children’s Hospital and the Ministry of Health, to provide ongoing training for healthcare professionals around the country. The organization has also taken the lead in building a safe infant transport system between hospitals.
