Tet Chay Vu Lan (the Vu Lan Veggie Festival) will take place from 8am to 9pm on September 30 at Gamuda City, next to Yen So Park in Hanoi’s Hoang Mai district, organized by Tu Ky Pagoda, the An Lac Businessmen Community, Gamuda Land Vietnam, and Thai Ha Books.

Starting last year, the Vu Lan Veggie Festival is held annually a month after Vu Lan, an important Buddhist holiday on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month and which promotes a vegetarian culture and expresses gratitude to parents, based on the belief that eating vegetarian food on this occasion will make prayers for parents more powerful. In modern times, Vu Lan also marks Mother’s Day in Vietnam.

More than 50 vegetarian restaurants and organic food stores from Hanoi and neighboring areas will be in attendance. Together with food offerings, culinary experts and vegetarians and vegans will share diet stories and guide people on eating vegetarian in a healthy and environmentally-friendly manner. Superior Buddhist Monk Thich Hai Tang from Long An Pagoda in the central province of Quang Tri will hold a discussion about parents’ love of their children and a painting exhibition reflecting the theme of a mother’s love will also be shown.

The highlight of the event is solemn ceremonies in the evening expressing children’s respect for the parents, including children giving rose to mothers and washing their parents’ feet.

Entry and food is free. The non-profit event also aims to promote the humanitarian values of eating vegetarian and is expected to attract 4,000 to 5,000 visitors.
