Vietnam jumped from 14th last year to second this year in the Expat Insider 2019 survey by InterNations, a global network and information site for people who live and work abroad, putting it in the top 10 for the first time.

The survey was conducted on more than 20,000 expats representing 182 nationalities and living in countries and territories around the world, to provide information on various aspects of expat life, with responses used to rank 64 countries and territories in terms of expat living. Respondents were asked to rate up to 48 different factors on living in a new country, including quality of life, ease of settling in, working, family life, personal finances, and cost of living.

The survey revealed that expats in Vietnam are particularly happy with their career prospects, with 68 per cent being satisfied vs. 55 per cent globally, and their jobs in general, with 74 per cent satisfied vs. 64 per cent globally.

Vietnam was the highest-ranking country in both the working abroad category and the personal finances category. Eighty-one per cent, compared to 64 per cent worldwide, of expats are happy with their financial situation and 75 per cent, compared to 49 per cent worldwide, said their disposable household income is more than they need to cover daily costs.

This may be partially because living in Vietnam is also considered affordable, with 86 per cent of expats rating the cost of living positively, compared to 47 per cent globally.

This year, Taiwan (China), Vietnam, and Portugal were the best expat destinations in the world, for their ease of settling in and good personal finances.

Other countries on the list, in order, were Mexico, Spain, Singapore, Bahrain, Ecuador, Malaysia, and the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, the ten worst countries for expats are Kuwait, Italy, Nigeria, Brazil, Turkey, India, the UK, Greece, Russia, and South Korea.

In July, Vietnam was also selected among the top 10 destinations for expatriates in HSBC’s Global Expat Explorer Survey report, climbing eight ranks from 18th last year. Its appeal has expanded greatly in recent years and, in particular, serial expats are setting their sights on the magnificent landscape, lively culture, and positive work-life balance, according to the report.
