Team Synergy from Vietnam emerged as the Grand Champion at the 4th ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) South-East Asia Business Challenge 2018, which concluded on May 17 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The annual competition brought together the brightest minds from the region’s leading universities and polytechnics, where their finance and business skills were put to the test. Sponsored by Deloitte Southeast Asia and the Maybank Group, the Challenge aims to identify the next generation of leaders in business, accountancy, and finance to support and build a strong ASEAN economy.

“It was an honor to be a part of the ICAEW South-East Asia Business Challenge 2018,” said Mr. Nguyen Anh Duong, leader of Team Synergy. “We are grateful for the valuable exposure on this regional platform, where we learned practical skills and shared knowledge with our peers from other countries. We also got to interact and receive guidance from veterans in the business and accountancy and finance profession in the region.”

The 12 finalists from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam came a long way after winning the local national level competition and rigorous pre-selection rounds between February and May this year. The ICAEW South-East Asia Business Challenge 2018 saw a total of close to 140 teams from leading universities and polytechnics in six countries vying for a spot in the Grand Final.

During the one-day Challenge, each team was required to take on the role of business consultants and chartered accountants to analyze and present workable solutions for an actual business case to a panel of judges comprising some of the most esteemed business and accountancy professionals in Southeast Asia. This year’s Challenge also included an unexpected element to test the teams’ agility and responsiveness.

The winning Vietnamese team will fly to London for an all-expenses paid trip that includes a visit to the Chartered Accountants’ Hall, the headquarters of ICAEW.

“The ICAEW South-East Asia Business Challenge sets out to nurture future talent, providing them with an invaluable opportunity to broaden their knowledge and hone their skills,” said Mr. Mark Billington, ICAEW Regional Director, South-East Asia. “Challenges combining both technical and soft skills are designed to ensure that our students not only develop technical expertise but also strong business acumen and employability.”

There are over 1.7 million chartered accountants and students around the world; talented, ethical and committed professionals who use their expertise to ensure we have a successful and sustainable future. Over 150,000 of these are ICAEW Chartered Accountants. It trains, develops and supports each one of them so they have the knowledge and values to help build local and global economies that are sustainable, accountable and fair.

ICAEW has been at the heart of the accountancy profession since being founded in 1880 to ensure trust in business. It shares its knowledge and insight with governments, regulators and business leaders worldwide as it believes accountancy is a force for positive economic change across the world.
