Opening ceremony in Hanoi a precursor to a number of initiatives
On March 28 at Dien Hong Hall – National Assembly House the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-132) opening ceremony was held with an attendance of more than 900 legislators representing 160 groups around the world.
Themed “Sustainable development goals: Turning words into action”, measures for sustainable development will be discussed, with a variety of gender equality objectives to be integrated.
IPU-132 will also discuss issues surrounding the role of parliament in the fields of cyber security, water management, international law, national sovereignty, human rights, gender equality, issues relating to the United Nations, human rights, health care, and diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
The event is historic in diplomatic terms, showing that Vietnam's National Assembly is willing to participate broadly and deeply in global integration.
“In the more than 125 year history of the IPU, the world has witnessed many changes," Vietnam National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung stated in his opening speech. "But the spirit of peaceful cooperation passed down by the founders of the IPU remains invaluable.” He indicated that it is a good opportunity to promote important global issues and believed delegates would agree to convey a strong and united message.
Chairman of the IPU Saber Chowdhury said each country cannot continue to merely aim for GDP growth targets but must also work towards improving happiness, quality of life, security, safety and human rights.
