Leaders from the 21 APEC economies are set to gather in the central city of Da Nang for the start of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, with speeches to come from US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

APEC Economic Leaders’ Week opened on November 6 and will welcome between 12,000 and 14,000 attendees. Thousands of businesspeople will attend, including Facebook COO Ms. Sheryl Sandberg, UPS’s CEO Mr. David Abney, and Chairman and CEO of J.P. Morgan Asia Pacific, Mr. Nicolas Aguzin.

State President Tran Dai Quang will host the opening of the APEC CEO Summit on November 8 and the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting on November 11.

President Trump will travel to Da Nang on November 10 and deliver a speech at the CEO Summit, presenting the US economy’s vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region and underscoring the important role the region plays in advancing America’s economic prosperity, the White House said in a statement last week.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Xi will also deliver speeches on November 10 while the President of the Philippines, Mr. Rodrigo Duterte, will speak on November 9.

The remaining eleven members of the TPP agreement are also expected to make a final announcement on the fate of the trade deal this week. The deal had been viewed as the world’s largest until President Trump withdrew the US soon after his inauguration in January.

This year’s APEC, themed “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future”, will discuss sustainable growth, deepening economic ties, increasing competitiveness of small businesses, and enhancing food security in times of climate change.

Around 2,000 journalists from Vietnam and overseas have registered to attend the Leaders’ Week, which is being hosted by Vietnam for the second time.
