South-central port opens for business in presence of State President Truong Tan Sang.
Cam Ranh Port officially opened in south-central Khanh Hoa province on March 8 at a ceremony attended by State President Truong Tan Sang.
The port is one of the largest in Vietnam and can berth 18 vessels at one time and 185 each year, including those of 110,000 DWT. It is the first port in Vietnam capable of protecting vessels from Level 8 storms.
There are two sections of the port: onshore construction and the water-related construction. While the water-related construction includes wharfs the onshore construction features service centers, offices, canteens, logistical systems, sports areas, green space, and a land plot to build an international maritime exhibition center. The port will cater to both commercial and military vessels.
Cam Ranh Bay holds a strategic location in the East Sea due to its proximity to international navigation routes and the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands as well as to oil and gas areas on Vietnam’s south-east continental shelf.
Addressing the opening ceremony, President Sang hailed the Saigon Newport Corporation and the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) for completing the first phase of the important project.
He urged the Saigon Newport Corporation to step up the implementation of the second phase, ensuring progress and quality.
