Upgraded airport in Hai Phong to permit easier travel for city-dwellers and all in northern region.
An opening ceremony for Cai Bi International Airport in northern Hai Phong city was held on May 12.
Addressing the event, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highlighted the importance of the project not only for Hai Phong but also other localities in the north and in the Red River Delta in helping local people travel by air internationally and domestically. He expected airlines to consider opening new routes from and to Hai Phong.
The upgrades to Cat Bi Airport, which cost an estimated VND3.66 trillion ($164.7 million), include a new runway, a terminal that can accommodate 2 million passengers a year, a parking apron as well as other support facilities. It is capable of accommodating Boeing 777s, Boeing 747s and similar aircraft, according to the city’s People’s Committee.
Cat Bi Airport currently caters to 36 flights a day and last year welcomed nearly 1.3 million passengers, up 35.6 per cent against 2014.
Vietnam Airlines’ new Boeing 787 Dreamliner flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Hai Phong to celebrate the opening.
The national flag carrier and low-cost carriers Vietjet Air and Jetstar Pacific are now conducting flights from and to Cat Bi International Airport, including five domestic routes to and from Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Pleiku and Buon Me Thuot.
