The APEC 2017 Second Senior Officials Meeting (SOM2) and related meetings were held for the fifth day on May 13, with eleven meetings and workshops hosted by APEC working groups and subcommittees, local media report.

Among those was a workshop on linking education startups for youth, women and athletes, hosted by the Human Resources Development Working Group (HRDWG).

Opening the workshop, Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Sports Administration under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that APEC now focuses on linking education and promoting startups for youth, women and athletes, in order to serve its common target of building a dynamic, sustainable, and harmonious Asia-Pacific community.

She appreciated all ideas that help promote and support post-retirement life for female athletes, thus contributing to overall economic development in the region.

She expressed a hope that, after the workshop, APEC member economies would promulgate suitable and effective policies in this field.

The workshop discussed government policies that are important for advancing the comprehensive education of athletes and female athletes in particular. Thanks to these policies, athletes will have a well-rounded education that supports their future career development.

Delegates shared best practices of APEC economies in youth startups as well as uses for the APEC Sports Policy Network (ASPN)’s 2018 sports newsletters, which are designed to be published in April, July and October in 2018.

The APEC Study Centres Consortium (ASCC) Conference 2017, which opened on May 12, continued with discussions on the development of an APEC labor mobility framework and the enhancement of the capacity and competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises.

Hosted by the Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI), the meetings of the Friends of the Chair on trade liberalization and of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific region (FTAAP) discussed ways to facilitate trade cooperation among APEC member economies.

The HRDWG also hosted a meeting to discuss the activities of its Education Network and prepare for the High-Level Dialogue on Human Resources Development in the Digital Age, while presiding over a workshop on regional cooperation in skills and employment in APEC.
