The Top 5 industries with the highest compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) over the last three years have changed places, according to latest FAST500 report and rankings from Vietnam Report, which rates businesses and products and services in Vietnam.

The CAGR pioneers are still steel, building materials and real estate, machinery, food and beverages, and electricity. However, the leading industry has changed. From 2008 to 2011 machinery led the way, with a CAGR of 85.7 per cent. From 2009 to 2012 building materials took over, with 59.3 per cent, before being ousted during 2010 to 2013 by steel, with 37.4 per cent.

The CAGR of the Top 10 enterprises with the fastest growth was usually three-fold or four-fold the average CAGR of all enterprises, according to the report.

“The number of foreign enterprises in the FAST500 report has never been more than 6 per cent,” the report said. Domestic enterprises have always dominated the list of 500 enterprises with the fastest growth, at 78, 72, 64, 66 and 68 per cent, respectively, from 2011 to 2015.

Among the enterprises in the FAST500 report for two consecutive years, only 38 per cent improved their position. The average CAGR from 2010 to 2013 of enterprises in the survey declined sharply, from 43.6 to 29.1 per cent.

Moreover, among large enterprises recording the highest growth in 2013, domestic enterprises accounted for 72 per cent. This indicates that domestic enterprises have been very active, the report said.

Over 24 per cent of enterprises in the FAST500 report were listed on the stock exchange, with an average CAGR of 22.9 per cent from 2010 to 2013.

Return on equity (ROE) in 2013 of sectors such as transport, medicine - healthcare, and information technology - telecommunications, was higher than the average by about 17 per cent.
